Dougherty Land Deed Book D, Pg. 245 Grantee: Edward Gwin Date: 23 Apr 1838 Know all men by these presents that I Robert E. C. Dougherty of the County of Carroll and State of Tennessee have this day bargained and sold and do by these presents bargain and sell unto Edward Gwin of the County and State aforesaid the following named Negroes Slaves, to wit. Allen a Mulatto boy aged about twelve or thirteen years and Harriet a black Girl aged about fourteen years old for the sum of fifteen hundred dollars to me in hand paid by the said Edward Gwin, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged. And I the said Robert E C. Dougherty do hereby obligate myself my heirs Executors and Administrators to warrant and defend the title to the foregoing named negro Slaves Allin and Harriet to the said Edward Gwin, his heirs and as-signs forever against the claims of all and any person or persons what soever, and I do hereby warrant said negroes boy & Girl to be slaves for life.
